Coloured Pencils
Coloured pencils are an essential part of any artist’s supplies. Today, these wooden pencils are available in sophisticated shades. This allows you to create professional-grade drawings and sketches.
Types of coloured pencils
Broadly, there are three types of coloured pencils – wax-based, oil-based and water-soluble. Wax-based pencils are less expensive. However, they are more difficult to erase, blend and layer than oil-based pencils. However, the two pencil types can be combined. Water-soluble pencils mimic watercolour paints. The colour is applied dry, giving you greater control.
Colouring techniques
These are the most popular colouring techniques when using artist pencils:
- Stippling – This is a great way to add texture to your drawings. It involves placing lots of tiny dots (either close together or far apart) all over the paper.
- Hatching – Drawing a series of parallel lines
- Cross-hatching – Add some texture by drawing a series of parallel lines (hatching), then drawing a second series over the first.
- Scumbling – You may have tried this technique as a kid and not been aware of it. Scumbling involves drawing circular marks all over the paper without lifting the pencil.
Benefits of using coloured pencils
There are many advantages to working with coloured pencils. These include:
Lightweight and portable – Carry them in a pencil case and create a masterpiece wherever you are
No set-up required – Unlike other art forms (like painting, pottery, etc.), drawing with coloured pencils doesn’t require any tedious set-up. Simply open your sketchpad and start drawing.
Easy to sharpen and erase – When your leads become dull, simply sharpen them with pencil sharpeners. And mistakes are quickly removed with erasers.
Limitless possibilities – With a virtually endless variety of colours and consistencies available, you’ll never get bored
