Highlighters
A variant of the felt tip pen, the highlighter is a truly indispensable tool. Very popular among students and business people, highlighters are used to make important passages of text stand out and make studying much easier. With a myriad of highlighter pens to choose from, they are suitable for many different applications. These include: studying, preparing work presentations, art and crafts projects.
Highlighting 101
A type of marker, the highlighter uses water-based ink to mark important passages of text. It is the most effective way to illuminate study notes, because it uses thick, translucent ink to highlight notes, without compromising quality. Some highlighters have a waxy quality, similar to oil pastels. And “dry highlighters” apply thin paint strips, rather than ink onto the highlighted surface.
Highlighter types
Three of the preferred highlighter types are liquid highlighters, gel highlighters and pencil highlighters. Their features are described below.
Liquid highlighters
Using liquid ink, these highlighter pens have a similar consistency to markers. Also, this variety has the most colour options, pen designs and tip features. However, those with broad tips or wet ink tend to bleed through paper easily.
Gel highlighters
As the name suggests, these highlighters mark surfaces with the consistency of gel pens, instead of ink. This ink makes it far more resistant to bleed-through and smudging and is less likely to dry out. However, they are not as precise as other highlighters. So, they’re not recommended for intricate designs.
Pencil highlighters
These are pencil-shaped highlighters, which are available in many colours. There is no risk of bleed-through and it does not require any time to dry out. Although, as the ink is thinner, it may take several strokes to highlight sections of text.
